BNPL and Your Credit Score in 2026: What Actually Changed

If you have read any headline this year, it probably said some version of "BNPL now affects your credit score." Here is the less exciting truth: FICO announced BNPL-specific scores in June 2025, but as of late 2026 they are not live at scale. The headlines ran ahead of reality.

What FICO actually announced

On June 23, 2025, FICO unveiled FICO Score 10 BNPL and FICO Score 10 T BNPL, the first major credit scores built specifically to read buy-now-pay-later loans. The innovation: instead of treating five small BNPL loans opened in a week as a risk spike, the models group a borrower's concurrent BNPL loans before scoring. A joint FICO/Affirm study of 500,000+ consumers found 85% of BNPL users would see their score move fewer than 10 points under the new models.

Why they are not live yet

In March 2026, FICO admitted the scores only reach the bureaus once BNPL data is furnished at scale, and that condition still had not been met. The scores exist. Lenders have not adopted them yet because the underlying data is still flowing in. So your traditional FICO score today is mostly unaffected by on-time BNPL payments, with one big exception below.

The exception: Affirm reports everything

Affirm began reporting all of its loans, including Pay in 4, to Experian in April 2025 and TransUnion in May 2025. Those tradelines sit on your file now. Missed payments get reported after 30 days past due and can stay up to 7 years. Klarna's Pay in 4 and Afterpay's Pay in 4 are still not reported to any bureau. Sezzle does not report by default (its opt-in Sezzle Up reports to all three). PayPal Pay in 4 is not reported, but a defaulted balance sent to collections can appear.

What to do about it

First, know which of your providers report. Our free audit flags this per plan. Second, treat any Affirm plan like a loan, because on your credit file, it is one. Third, remember that missed payments sent to collections show up regardless of provider. The safest assumption: on-time payments mostly help or stay neutral, late payments can hurt, and the rules are still being written.
