Sezzle Fees Explained: The Priciest 'Interest-Free' Plan

Every BNPL provider calls its Pay in 4 "interest-free." Only Sezzle pairs that label with the densest fee stack in the industry: late fees, failed-payment fees, reschedule fees, service fees, and two paid subscriptions. Here is the full picture, verified October 2026.

Late fees: the highest on this list

Sezzle charges up to $16.95 per late payment, more than double Klarna's $7 and Afterpay's $8. Some sources describe a $10 fee waived if paid within 48 hours; Sezzle's own 10-K says fee amounts vary by transaction, lender, and state. Treat $16.95 as the number to plan around.

The fees nobody mentions at checkout

Failed payments: up to $6.95 when a scheduled charge does not go through. Reschedules: one free per order, then $5 each (up to $7.50 in some disclosures), max two per order. Service fees: up to $7.49 on some transactions. There is even a $1.99 "late saver" fee in some circumstances. Then the subscriptions: Sezzle Premium at $13.99/month and Sezzle Anywhere at $19.99/month.

What Sezzle does not do (by default)

Sezzle does not report Pay in 4 activity by default. Its opt-in Sezzle Up program reports payment history to all three bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Approval uses a soft credit check only.

The honest math

Take a $200 order. Miss one payment: up to $16.95. Have the retry fail too: another $6.95. Reschedule twice: $10 more. You are at roughly $34 in fees on a $200 "interest-free" purchase, a 17% cost for being a few weeks late. Compare that with Affirm ($0) or PayPal Pay in 4 ($0) before you choose the app at checkout.
